Make filament color names a drop down of existing tags#61

K

The free form field that is used to populate tags from print jobs or print files are subject to spelling errors when selecting custom colors. If this was a drop down of exising color options with the ability to add new ones that would be great!

For some reason I have a hard time spelling “Safety Orange” and “Vanilla Bean” from Jessie and have bungled up several print queue items…

This is a really great idea! And one we thought about when designing the “Tags” feature 😎 So, it’s actually already implemented, but based on filament spools you have created only at the moment.

So, if you create a spool with the color name “Vanilla Bean”, next time you click in any “Color name” field on our site, it’ll show up as a suggestion, as well as narrowing down the possible results as you type.

This could be expanded to “remember” custom color names you have saved outside the “Filament spool” space, so simply for tags, but from a technical standpoint, this is not currently something we’d be able to add with just a flick of a switch.

So, for now, the ones that get to enjoy this feature, are the ones that add each individual spool (or who just add a couple of “placeholder” spools to simply get the auto-completion to work ;) )

We’ll keep the suggestion open, as if it’s upvoted a lot, we might “bite the bullet” and expedite this for just tag-saving color names as well.

Once again; thanks for the suggestions!

Ahhhh, that explains something in my first foray into the spool feature. I’ve got spools setup for whenever the current ones run out. Figured we’d start with fresh ones. Maybe, just maybe, this won’t be a pain for me much longer. Thanks!!

Additionally you could add a spool “ID” if you want to use a specific spool as well. I also have noticed if you add your “Vanilla Bean” and then go back to your queue, it doesnt show the tag unless you manually pick a color (even though the color was chosen when the spool was made).

I’m not sure I understand, @Revenantravendesigns - could you elaborate?

@Albert Møller Nielsen ,

Basically when you add something to queue and select material details the form field does work if I select Vanilla Bean, Cyan, whatever. However it doesn’t fill in the hex color/swatch. So you would need to actually select a color or custom color for the tag to display in queue. I’m not home today so I can’t show a specific example at the moment.

I’m aware this would be more fit for the bug suggestion but I figured I’d mention it since I wanted to add in the suggestion for the spool ID code to be available on the form field as well. So when I queue an item and I know I want spool “7HI3” it will queue with that color

Yea, that’s neat, hadn’t thought of targeting a specific spool. I think that generally speaking I don’t care about the exact spool but rather a class of spools. So what I’ve been doing is making a custom tag that replicates the material setting then I can just pick it from the list of available tags rather than having to type in the name.
