Print-File Notes: Free Text-Field to add personal notes to a print file and print job Item#402

M

It would be great to have a free text field for each print file (e.g. in the file overview where you alread see the File Size, Cost, Print Time) where you can add personal notes, e.g.:

  • Manual Pauses after X-hours in the presliced File to change Filament / add Print-In-Place Parts
  • Special Requirements on the Build Plate
  • Special things to ensure / consider when printing the file

And same for Print Queue Items where you may add job specific topics like for example special Filament / Color / Print Plate requirements for the job

@Markus you can achieve this quite easily using our “Custom fields” feature - have you tried this?

Hi @Albert
Yes I tried this within the demo phase, now I don’t have access anymore due to the fact that this feature is only available in the print farm plan for 30€ more… and this is not worth the money as I don’t need further features.

But I still think that a custom text field still makes sense, e.g. to note that a print-in-place part 1 needs to be inserted after 3.5h and another one after 10.7 hours… sure you can do it with tags - but a simple text field would be much more flexible.

The configured print plate is part of your new filament implementation - so this is than perfectly covered.

Thanks for clarifying @Markus

I definitely get that it might be cool, but, my stance - at least for now - is that this is a prime example of what Custom Fields is for, and that adding too many more columns to the print queue tab will;

  1. Undermine custom fields, and decrease its value - which, of course, as we do have to think a little bit about providing value to our top plan, we’re not super happy about doing
  2. Add too much clutter for those who don’t need it. The list of suggested queue fields - just the ones I can remember - include; backburner item (yes/no), AutoPrint-compatible, AutoPrint release temperature, order number, deadline - and the list goes on

And while typing this, I only just now ask myself - and the users behind this suggestion; why not use the “Queue item note”? It doesn’t carry into the print job, but it’s a note field where you can type anything you’d like. Maybe this is too hidden, or doesn’t suffice for some reason?

We have thought about removing the “Queue item note” feature, simply because it’s not very used.
