Load filament mid-job#267

Currently, SP cannot load filament during a print job. I have to cancel the job to use the SP filament loading process, which is a big bummer.

Bambu Studio/OrcaSlicer can both load filament without cancelling the job. It would be better if SP could load filament using a similar function.

You just need to pause the job, no? Shouldn’t need to cancel it.

Is this for Bambu?

Yes it’s for Bambu. I will try pausing the job next time. It will be a big improvement if that works. It would be better if SP could recognize that a job is active, pause it, change the filament, and resume the job without me having to manually pause and resume.

I had 3 printers pause overnight due to cut filament. None of them will load the filament while the print is paused. I don’t think this works like you intend.

Roger that - thanks for confirming!

It’s not yet “intended” for Bambu at all, actually. It’s untested and on the list of things that we don’t know if works, / isn’t “intended” to work just yet, in the Bambu Beta invitation email.

We have yet to evaluate whether this feature is even something we should spend time getting to work with Bambu, as it was primarily designed for older printers where loading and unloading filament isn’t as easy as pushing a button - but nowadays there are smarter ways of doing it.

We’ll evaluate and try it out at some point before the beta ends, but this feature for Bambu printers isn’t super high on our priority list - just FYI :)

Thanks again for taking the time to post about your experience! We can’t try out everything ourselves, so it’s always helpful to hear from the community!

this is a big deal when the you’re in LAN mode and you either run out of filament, or if the SP cuts the filament in error (as it frequently does when printing from external spools). As a result, you have to cancel the print, no matter how complete it is, trash the part, reload and restart.

This gets expensive and is a huge hassle. I woudl suggest this should be a high priority.

That said, if there is a better way to load new filament mid-job, I’d love to know what it is.

I think maybe some things are getting mixed up here. The “Change filament” feature should have nothing to do with, what sounds like, is a bug.

I don’t believe anyone else in the Bambu Beta uses the “Change filament” feature inside SimplyPrint; most change filament on the printer.

Let’s move this to the Discord, as we’re moreso in the “Bambu Lab beta feedback” category, which we try to contain to the Discord server. Do create a post in the “#beta-troubleshooting” channel, and we’ll be right with you to check the case out :)
