Replace files in the queue#254

Sometimes students are not able to use the slicer we reccomend. Their best course of action is to upload the .stl file and we can slice the file ourselves. I would be great to have the option to replace the file with another file and keep the original owner of the upload informed of print notifications form SimplyPrint. This would also keep the queue order the same for all people in the queue.

You can do this with the SimplyPrint slicer right now. When slicing something via the print queue, you can select “Replace model in queue with sliced file” after slicing.

I found a bug in this yesterday though, that may result in it not working. This has since been fixed, and will be out later today.

Currently not possible to do unless you use the SimplyPrint slicer though.

Thank for the quick response, Albert. It is good to know you can use the built-in slicer. I hope that maybe in the future admins are able to replace the file with another file that was sliced outside of SimplyPrint. There are a number of reasons to want this feature and probably not worth listing here. Just would be a nice option to have I think.

The fix for the existing “Replace model in queue with sliced file” is now live :)

@Mnoffsin do expand on your suggestion if you don’t mind! It helps us see the actual reason behind the suggestion. Getting to the core problem sometimes helps all parties find a solution that may not even be the originally-proposed solution, but one that still tackles the core problem.

I will try to explain it as best as I can. I run a school account. This means that I have students who will be logging in and queueing prints. The issue is that most of the students are not trained to slice properly. What most students will be uploading is an .stl file. What I would like to do is be able to download their .stl file and slice it. (we use the PrusaSlicer with settings that we have tailored to work well with our machines). After slicing the file and creating the .gcode file I would like to be able to replace their .stl file in the queue my .gcode file. The queue would still show them as the uploader of the queued file but I simply replace it with a printable file. This way, they still retain their place in the queue and still receive notification of the print as it is started and ended. (this last point isnt currently working and there is a different suggestion that I upvoted yesterday to see if that can happen)
