Student account "Home" page (for schools)#183

We’re trying to figure out how to make the SimplyPrint experience better for students - especially students that may not have access to start their own prints, but require a farm operator to do so for them.

Right now, the print queue “submission” is done by the student going to the print queue, clicking “Add” and picking their file.

But, we’re thinking about adding a “Home” page that the student lands on instead of the “Printers” or “Your files” page (“Files” page in case they don’t have permission to see the “Printers” page).

This “Home” page could show things like;

  • Amount of items they have in the queue (the specific student’s prints only), what position they have in the queue (how many items are in front of it), and maybe approximately when they are expected to be printed
  • A “Print queue submission form”, presenting the student with a form with a few fields; file upload, a “Notes” field, “Prefered color” selection, and - in the future - perhaps custom fields set by the school, such as “Project”, etc.
  • Quick links, set by the school, such as “Link to [prefered slicer]”
  • Information notices, set by the school, displaying whatever info you’d like
  • Link to downloading the app (for notifications)
  • Courses progress (for when the “Courses” feature is live - soon!)

We wanna keep it simple; a landingpage for all students, with focus on easy print job submissions.

Looking for feedback on how this could look, what we may be missing in our scope ^, and how you think we should shape it!

This is exactly what we are looking for. Having a way for people to just submit the 3d file itself with requirements is exactly what we are looking for. I can email you the form we currently use for an idea of how to format it.

@Ethanparekattil2027 that’s great! If you don’t mind; please do share it here. We open the discussion on this public forum, to feed off of each other’s ideas, and to better track suggestions, so things like this form won’t get lost in the email after a while :)

We don’t use the print queue feature in our set up, we train our students to use the printers directly, mainly because we don’t have a team to process requests, so it self serve. That being said, this idea seems extremely useful. I think adding the custom fields will be extremely useful.

This would also be a great addition if you want to offer a print-as-a-service on top of the “normal” DIY-print approach. If this form covers the usage of the final part, material preferences and so on. Most importantly you can bill it in one place over the SimplyPrint-Account and don’t have to have two systems in parallel.

Took a screenshot so the actual link didn’t have to be public. I can’t seem to edit your comment, but feel free to edit or delete it, @Ethanparekattil2027. Thanks for sharing!

The “Name”, “Phone Number” and “Email” would probably be taken care of my SimplyPrint, as the user would have an account. Any objection to these fields not being present?

Thank you for the screenshot, I appreciate the discretion. In terms of objecting to the name/phone/email not being present, we do also serve people who might not be students including local community organizations, so they would be unable to use SSO to sign in.

@Ethanparekattil2027 so a “On behalf of…” would work too?

Perhaps you should be able to generate a print queue submission link that you can make publicly viewable too. Then you can use that on your website, and the file would go directly into SimplyPrint?

That’s perfect. Like one that we can embed like we have with the form currently so that anyone we direct there can upload their file and put their name / project name etc. That way simply print can also have folders with the name of each project and containing all their files
