Add SuperSlicer!#110

I use super slicer and I think the community will love it

“Add” SuperSlicer how exactly? :) Ability to slice using the SuperSlicer engine within the SimplyPrint platform, instead of our current slicer? Or how do you mean? :)

I was thinking that there would be a dropdown/button that would switch the normal slicer to super slicer in Simply Print. So yeah basically you nailed it! ;)

Alrighty. Well, the hope is that we some day will offer multiple different slicer engines to slice your files, but we can’t simply take a slicer, and “put it on the web”. It would require a 100% rewrite of the entire SuperSlicer (or any other slicer), as it’s not made to run in the web.

So, I can confidently say we won’t - with how the web works in 2023 - be able to simply port SuperSlicer to the web - sadly!

Okay, I forgot about that part! But yes, that does make sense. Do you know if you need perm from supermill (or whoever ‘owns it’). I might be able to find a platform that would rewrite the code for the web.

As long as it’s open source, and we comply with the license, we wouldn’t need explicit permission - but we’d probably still ask, of course.

We’re not anywhere near the point where we’re ready to look into something like this, but I can confidently say that no platform or automated service out there, would be able to port something like a slicer, to web-code; it’s really complex, and it’s without a doubt a much better solution to start from the bottom up with all the UI and 3D view, which has to be made with “Three.js”.

But, the engine we could easily take, feed it with a slicer profile, and slice the item in our backend - it’s all the web UI, being able to move the 3D model around, visualize things like support and the sliced model, that is the real hard/time-consuming part.

Okay. Yeah, I see. Well, have a great rest of the year! 2024!

I get where the suggestion comes from, for sure! It’s just frustratingly complicated! We’d love nothing more than to plun’ n’ play be able to offer all the different slicers in the web :)

Thank you, and likewise; happy new year soon! Thanks for suggesting stuff and keeping us on our toes.

This might be coming soon, in the sense that we’re hoping to have a SimplyPrint integration _in_ SuperSlicer.

We just launched our integration for OrcaSlicer (https://simplyprint.io/integrations/orcaslicer), and we made sure that the code should be relatively easily ported to SuperSlicer, and the SuperSlicer developer seems open to accepting the integration - so this could be coming soon!
